The Munich American High School
Munich American High School (MAHS)
Munich American Elementary School (MAES)

By 1955, the construction of the 67 three-story apartment buildings built to house the families of US soldiers stationed in and around Munich was nearly completed.  That American housing area was fondly known to us as Perlacher Forst (or Perlacher Forest, or Perlacker).

If you lived in the Perlacher Forest (Perlacher Forst) DOD housing area you lived in a duplex housing unit and attended the Munich American Elementary School (MAES) and then the Munich American High School (MAHS) on the corner of General-Kalb-Weg and Cincinnatistrasse.  The American housing area was close to the McGraw Kaserne on Tegernseer Landstrasse in Munich (Munchen), Germany.

Miss Bennis 1st Grade Class in 1962

My 1st grade class photo from The DoDDS Munich American Elementary School located in Munich (Munchen) Germany (1962). The teacher shown in the photo was Miss Bennis.   Pictured are many unknown classmates and a few I can still remember like Phillip Geiger, Chuck Scholtz, Marsha Richards.  I would appreciate someone who recognizes this class photo to help me remember more. Where are you all now?

The Munich American High School (MAHS) and the Munich American Elementary Schools (MAES) were co-located on Cincinnatistrasse in the Perlacher Forst (Forest) housing area near Fasengarten.  The school was open from 1946 until 1992 when it finally closed for good and became the Hauptschule at the Cincinnatistraße in Munich.  It's gotten quite a nice (bright blue) paint job.  It never looked like that back in the 50's and 60's.

Now back to the good old days...

DOD Busses

We were riding busses like this one back in 1961-1963.  I can even remember our bus drivers name was "Tony."

Perlacher Forst American Housing Area - 3 Girls
One of our favorite things was to go to the movie theater.
It was so safe back then we could have walked anywhere together.

Some excellent map links to the Munich American Elementary School:

Excellent overhead satellite view of the Munich American High School (MAHS)

Great interactive map link of the Perlacher American Housing Area

Overhead view of the Munich Mustangs horse mascot statue

Interactive aerial satellite view of the Munich American Elementary School (MAES)
This is the best map tool!  After you see the map, switch to an "aerial" view then you can zoom in as much as you want.  You can swing the camera around and look at the front, back and sides.  This map places you right inside the Perlacher Forst housing area.  The school is on the corner of General-Kalb-Weg and Cincinnatistrasse, on the opposite side of the road from the old PX, and the hospital.

Ryan O'neal - 1959 MAHS Mustang

Trivia: Ryan O'neal graduated from the Munich American High School as a Mustang in 1959.

If you come across any other old class photos of the inside or outside of the school and would like to add them, please  email me here.  I am primarily looking for photos that are pre 1965.
